Buying an electric or hybrid vehicle is a big decision, and the acronyms don't help. BEV, PHEV, HEV they all sound similar but they work very differently. This page explains what each one means, who each type suits, and how to figure out which one fits your life.
There's no wrong answer. All three are better for your wallet and the environment than a standard petrol car. The question is just which one matches how you actually drive.
The three types explained
BEV — Battery Electric Vehicle
A BEV runs entirely on electricity. There is no petrol engine. You charge it at home, at work, or at a public charger, and it produces zero tailpipe emissions.
How it works
A large battery pack powers an electric motor that drives the wheels. When the battery runs low, you plug in and recharge. Charging at home overnight on a standard power point is the most common approach for Brisbane drivers, and many owners find they rarely use public chargers at all.
What it costs to run
Electricity is significantly cheaper than petrol per kilometre. A typical BEV costs around $3 to $5 to charge fully at home on a standard tariff, compared to $80 to $100 to fill a petrol tank of similar range. Servicing is also simpler and less frequent. No oil changes, no timing belts, fewer moving parts overall.
Who it suits
A BEV is the right choice if you have a predictable daily routine, cover 50 to 150 kilometres per day, have somewhere to charge at home or at work, and want the lowest possible running costs. Most Brisbane commuters are well within range of a BEV's daily capability without ever needing a public charger.
Things to consider
If you regularly drive long distances interstate or to regional areas, you will need to plan charging stops. The public charging network in Queensland is growing quickly, but it requires slightly more planning than stopping at a petrol station.
